Welcome to Field Notes!
This is the Field Notes Film of my 3 day backpacking trip to the Shining Rock Wilderness in Western North Carolina on October 25, 2023. It is not in sequence with other Field Notes editions and I did not send it out via email.
I originally included this film as a YouTube link in the Shining Rock Wilderness Southern Loop adventure story issue of Field Notes. This was before Substack offered specialty video post formats and before I began offering films as stand alone issues. However, I believe this film and a couple of others deserve their own post, so I am creating them now.
This trip was recorded using a GoPro Hero 10 Black. Earlier, lower quality films will only live on YouTube. I’ll post a link at the bottom, if interested. Now,
Lets go!

Shining Rock Southern Loop, Day 2
Welcome to Field Notes! Today we continue the trek through the southern portion of the Shining Rock Wilderness, NC, starting from where I camped at the top of Mt Tennent and going to the second night’s camp on top of Sam Knob. I will include as many photographs from the journey as I can, but keep checking my portfolio galleries for more-
Shining Rock Southern Loop, Day 3
Welcome to Field Notes! You guys, I had some hard learned photography lessons on this day. This was a cool and pretty chilly morning, but clear. I was photographing the sunrise for a while before I realized the front of my lens was fogging up. It was hard to notice in the dark. I began wiping it frequently, but as I photographed the sunrise, pointed …
