Field Notes Film: Kayaking Lake Chapman

Field Notes II.XXVI: A kayak exploration of Lake Chapman in Athens, Ga on 6/8/2024

Welcome to Field Notes!

Something a bit different today. As I mentioned before, I haven’t been able to get away on a backpacking trip since early May. Instead, I’ve started exploring the waters near me.

We got this cheap little sit-on-top kayak for my kids a year ago, but I’m only using it myself for the first time now. I grew up on a small lake and spent all of my summers swimming and catching turtles, so this quick outing brought back a lot of memories!

This film and the photos in it were made with my GoPro Hero 10 Black. Kayaking is new to me and, especially with this little boat, I won’t be taking my DSLR along. The GoPro, though, is waterproof and I am even able to get underwater film clips with it. So, until I figure out a better set up or get a better kayak, this is the way!

Are any of you guys kayakers? I have questions! For one, is it even reasonable to consider taking a DSLR at some point? And here’s a big one- I really only want to paddle flat water right now. Not too far from me, the wide and flat Oconee River meets Lake Oconee and would be a fantastic place to explore. But, if I put in along the river, can I expect to be able to paddle back upstream to get back to my truck? It would suck if Field Notes ends because the author is lost at sea! Maybe

could throw in some tips here?
