Welcome to Field Notes!
I went to Mount LeConte, Tennessee on October 24, 2024. Earlier that Autumn Hurricane Helene devastated large portions of Western North Carolina and diverted all of my plans for backpacking in the region in September, October, and November.
I read on line that Hwy 441, which runs directly through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, was open. I then looked at the parts of the park accessible from that road and found Mount LeConte. LeConte has a lodge near its peak, which is very expensive and often booked many months in advance. But it also has a simple shelter for backpackers. This shelter was open for reservations and I jumped on the chance to go.
I wrote about this trip here-
It was an unbelievable location. However, at the peak of fall leaf color in the Smokies, it drew huge crowds from nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I captured some of that in this film in the parking lot and one scene showing the train of people walking up the trail. Maybe I should have captured more.
Even so, I am glad I went. The Smokies are amazing, especially dressed in October’s finest colors. Hopefully my film captures the graneur.
By the way, earlier this year the rules for photography and fliming in National Parks were changed. So, I am happy to say I am no longer an outlaw for sharing these with you!
