When I moved to Nebraska, I kept hearing this noise and asked my friend what was making it...she told me cicadas. It was so loud that it was disturbing to me! Then one day when I was standing near a honey locust tree one big green one about 2 inches long landed on my arm. The feet were really sticky, so trying to get it off me and back into the tree was interesting.
Nebraska was also my introduction to fireflies. I was quite intrigued with them.
Then a couple of years ago they were in a camping area me and a friend stayed at. As dusk came, I ran around after them for 2 hours with my cell phone and ended up with some pretty decent photos of them both flying and landed on a bush or grass head. I wasn't trying to get light trails but to actually get photos of them lit up. They were quite fascinating!
Nebraska sounds like a cool place! I'm very familiar with both cicadas and fireflies here in Georgia. The cicadas I saw in Asheville were very different, though!
Low light photographs is not something I have practiced very much. Almost all of the photos I see on line of fireflies are of the trails from long exposures. One day I'll learn how to capture that, but I really like your idea of getting a photo of one or two prominent fireflies lit up. I might give that a try, too! Thank you.
Your Airbnb looks adorable from the outside 😍 And you're braver than me holding that critter in your hand 😁
Your posts are always so peaceful that I forget you work in law enforcement and deal with the UNpeaceful on the regular. I hope yesterday was manageable for you.
It was really nice on the inside, too! Now I’m wishing I’d taken pictures of it!
Haha, yeah I try to write just about the good stuff here. It didn’t turn out too bad. Got held over at the end of shift. The crowd was a couple thousand. A few sketchy dudes showed up wearing gas masks, helmets, elbow pads, and carrying packs, but they didn’t do anything.
Wish you success! If you have a smart phone, look for Night settings for some of your tries. On android it is under Morein your camera settings if you scroll to the right on the bottom row.
1) we should connect privately, if interested.. I'm super curious to hear about your perspective of June 2020 straight from the mouth of one who was there..ya know..instead of curated social media clips intended to incite anger in either direction.
And 2) oh no. Cicadas. Oh no no no NOOO. 🤣 they are the only bug to truly make me squeamish! I was watching Planet Earth (you know...the super chill nature show narrated by David Attinbourough , can't be bothered to double check his surname spelling..!) and I kid you not, last night the episode was about forests and it touched on the 17 year cicada brood. Growing up in the woody northeast, I've lived through one of those cycles before, as a kid. I. Hated. It. I even thought, while watching the Planet Earth episode, "it better not be year 17 for those little buggers once I hit the Long Trail!" And I guess it IS year 17!?!?!?! 😭🤣 maybe they'll hang out by you in the south and leave me alone in Vermont..🥲
Ahaha!! Cicadas aren’t bad, just noisy! I don’t know a ton about them, but I think the broods are very region specific. I live 3 hours south of Asheville and we don’t have that brood here, just the regular cicadas that come every year. Even if they are on the Long Trail, they’ll leave you alone! 😀
Yeah, let’s absolutely connect! I’m heading out the door to go to the Smokies, so maybe the end of the week or the weekend?
The region specific thing rings a vague, vague bell somewhere in my leftover brain cells..🥲😅 so hopefully I dont need to go anywhere near them!
Aw sounds good ! Enjoy your trip!! I'm mildly jealous. I STILL haven't seen the Smokies, which i hear is the second prettiest place on the Appalachian Trail!

I would love to know what Airbnb that is that has alpacas on premises!! That is cool and funny at the same time. My friend would love to stay there!
Sure! My wife found and booked it. Cool place and only about 15 minutes from town.

Glad you made it home safe 😊
Also, I clicked on the Airbnb listing to troll the pics. It's truly adorable!

I recently got a new iPhone and I’ll definitely give it a try!
That's great! Look forward to seeing your success with it.
Using the natural wild to tame the man made. Love it.
Great perspective!
Very late on this one. But two things...

OMG it was stunning! And I’m going back in 4 days!!
Hooray! I hope you got lots of photos to show us..?!?!
Oh absolutely did! I’m going to try to start these two trips as a 4 part series in a couple of weeks!
Already excited to read about it!
