I really enjoyed your descriptive writing in this post Erik and I love the sentiment.Seeing the possibilities in everything is such a good way to approach life and photography.
Thanks, Gill! This was actually a difficult post to write and I went through several overhauls, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. Its nice to hear that it is well received!
I like his books, but he would benefit from more Buddhism, considering what an (unnecessary) ass he is to many people, going back years on Twitter for starters. The evolutionary observations about the old/and what has endured, has always stuck with me though (and I studied math and biology, so that kind of systems thinking is already my bag and part of my way of seeing the world).
It’s always interesting to see how different weather provokes things in people—what is a novelty to you is depressing normality to me—winter here in Vancouver is basically living in a freezing rainforest fog bubble in eternal darkness. I biked through rain/snow flurries at around freezing temps yesterday to go swim and visit a farmers’ market. Accomplished!
I've read other stuff about Taleb being an ass, and it definitely comes through in his writing at times. However, some of his concepts have shifted the paradigm for me!
Your description of Vancouver actually sounds very cool to me, but I can't imagine how that is all day, every day. Here in the southeast US it's brown stick season. We get frost and fog one day and it's 70 degrees and sunny the next!
hah. Yeah, it's like this for 4-5 months a year, in this region of the world. The East coast and south weather is wild, it frightens me looking at it. This is probably one of the few regions in the world now where it's consistently cool throughout winter/less evidently touched by climate change, even though it still is.
Climate change is definitely in effect here. I grew up on a lake and remember waiting every year til the ice was thick enough to walk on. Lately, I can't even remember the last time it froze.
The ridiculous thing about the south is the humidity, even in winter. It can be 40 degrees, but your freezing your ass off and feeling soft compared with people living in snow covered lands! 🤣
Yes, same here. It's usually between 95-99% humidity in winter, and raining hard or slightly above freezing, it's very uncomfortable. I now prefer way below freezing and drier, it is honestly easier. Also you get more light.
I find so much beauty in fog! Foggy days are not dull, they're full of hidden treasure as captured in your photos.
I seriously want to buy one of your calendars but might have to order in the new year. Losing my job a while back has pretty much eliminated everything but necessities 😐 Plus, USD is like double in CAD lol.

Wonderful Erik. Your words reminded my of my hike two days ago through the forest after light snowfall. Quiet, cold, and just me.
Those are special times, for sure!
Very nice Erik. The very first photo grabbed me and i would hang that on my wall.
Wow! I'm honored!!

Aw, thanks! Don't stress about the calendar. I can keep it listed as long as necessary!
