January can indeed be a hard month for finding beauty - the snow and ice provide much relief from drab days. I'm glad you got some frosty weather. I like this quote "Winter winds attune the mind to an acute perception of being alive" this is very much how I feel about the cold...

Thanks Andrew! It is hard to find a balance between wanting to get out and being hindered by the conditions. But, once I'm out it always seems worth the effort!

I love the sunrise tree. Spring is still 3 months away for us. How long does your winter last?

I appreciate it Tim! For us, spring gets traction in early March.

Erik, that moon photo is stunning. I'd pay for that one. I'm always in love with the moon.

You should take a stunning moon photo every month this year and make those your 2026 calendar. I'll buy again!

I wish you could experience Canadian winter with your camera. It's so beautiful here...I think it's THE most beautiful season there is. Snow and ice are spectacular subjects and you've captured them so well.

Wow, thanks Kristi! That's a cool idea for a calendar, I just don't know if I could pull it off. Would take a lot of planning and then depend on the weather. I am starting to learn more about photographing the moon, though. I got some pretty good photos of the full moon over City Hall recently. I'll post those in Notes in a few days.

Yah I thought of the difficulty involved. Especially in summer months when it stays light out so late!

Looking forward to more moons though...😊

Lovely words and images Erik.

It can be difficult when the light is poor and everything looks brown and drab. We have had some very grey days here lately and its always a bit of a struggle, but there is beauty out there if we look for it. I especially like your backlit frosty images and the shot of the moon through the branches. These definitely capture the beauty of winter.

Thank you Gill! It's definitely a challenge, but I'm enjoying the process!

Lovely writing and images Erik - all I can say is we're enjoying 30 degree days!

Haha! Mid summer for you! We just got another 1" of snow tonight.

I know you said you were concerned if your words translated properly, but I think they did. It read like a collection of coherent thoughts in a lovely tapestry. And I agree with a lot of what you've written here. I've always loved December because, hello, Christmas! January is an altogether different beast, and one you've captured here. It's kind of...lethargic? Flat? Bitter cold? But simultaneously there's a weird pressure to speed up and jump into the new year.

Right?! January is kind of like hitting a speed bump. The suddenly brighter, longer days make me want to go out and do stuff. But then you run into so many setbacks, the weather being just the obvious one, that always seem to pop up and thwart the plans.

Brighter, longer days.....well, getting dark at 5:30 still qualifies as a short day for me, and I turn into a lazy old lady who doesn't want to leave the house to go to the gym 🤣 but yeah the weather and the cold puts a damper on things for sure!

Haha! Maybe it's just me. My work shifts are 6am to 6pm, so its pretty apparent when the sun sets AFTER I get home!
