“Wanting something strongly, aka desiring it, actually creates energetic turbulence that pushes it away.”

That sounds like the opposite of the so-called “Law of Attraction” (wishing can make it so) that many success coaches/gurus promote. Both views seem to me to vastly overstate our tiny impact on the universe. But a lot of our favorite stories are designed to make us feel more powerful than we are.

Have you noticed how your writing is getting deeper and richer over time, Erik? Probably not. That’s where an appreciative audience can come in handy. Keep on with it! 👏

I think that so much of this is dependent upon subtle perspective shifts and re-framing expectations. The idea of ‘manifesting’ is that if you want something strongly enough you can actually will it into existence. I don’t quite buy that, and those things are the indifferents we shouldn’t be wanting anyway. The perspective shift is to ‘manifest’ things to be just as they are and thrive in that. Perhaps with that energy nature will respond more providentially towards us.

I really appreciate your comments Baird. I do notice my writing evolving, but some of that may just be getting over the fear of publishing some of the thoughts in my mind, lol! Thanks!

Is wishing sort of like having hope? This made me think. Thank you. Beautiful as always.

I could see it as very close to the same thing!

Super fascinating. I’ve always found the idea of loosely wanting something — putting it to the universe, but not actively focusing on it — tends to manifest better than single-minded focus.

Exactly what I was getting at!!

Good luck on the Bartram Trail!! I too have a lot of nerves before ANY hike. Part of the process! They'll fade out within hours of stepping into the mountains. Thanks as always for your thoughts!

Thanks Niki! Its coming up quick, but I'm very excited for it!

Nice to hear that you also have a big adventure planned Erik. Can't wait to read more.

Your essay on boulesis made me think of farmers. I know many well, and I have always been impressed by how attuned they are to the change of seasons, how equanimous they need to be in the face of drought, flood, fire and changing markets. It takes a deep assurance about the future to continue to sow the crop or introduce the ram. They have a deep connection with the land that we can all learn from.

Wow, you’re right! Farmers are a perfect example of boulesis in action!
