Welcome to Field Notes!
It was the beginning of November, 2024. Earlier that autumn Hurricane Helene ripped through the Southern Appalachian Mountains, leaving devastation and tragedy behind. Many lost their lives, their homes, and their livelihoods.
I narrowly avoided any direct effect of the hurricane (that’s another story), but in its wake all of my plans for backpacking that fall were upended. I was left searching for locations to visit that were unaffected by the storm.
This is when I discovered the Pin-Chin-Sky Loop in the Talladega National Forest in Alabama. Its name is abbreviated from the three trials that combine to make the route- the Pinhoti Trail, the Chinabee Silent Trail, and the Skyway Loop Trail. Having never backpacked in Alabama before, this would be an interesting adventure!
The loop is only about 20 miles, but I stretched the trip into three days and two nights. You can read those adventure stories here-

Isn’t reading a physical book so much better than reading on a computer or a device? Well, if we’re reading physical books we need a bookmark. Luckily, I have one to offer! This bookmark of a sunset on Sam Knob in the Shining Rock Wilderness is $5. That includes tax and postage to mail it to any country in the world. Purchase it via the PayPal link below.
